The transformation from skein of yarn to sturdy bowl is a magical one. Each bowl is created over a period of several days.

The first step is selecting the colours for the bowl. The yarns I use are high quality wool and mohair blends that are made in the USA, and they come in a huge range of amazing colours.

The yarn is then crocheted by hand into a bowl. At this stage, it is still floppy, with pronounced stitches.

The bowl is then agitated in hot, soapy water. This causes the wool fibres to interlock and shrink, making the fabric increasingly dense and firm.

After the bowl has been felted, it is blocked (the same way milliners will block hats) and left until fully dry. It's then removed from the block and trimmed. It will be given further shaping if required.

The final product is a beautiful and sturdy container that will give many years of use.
